Inland Sealand is one of the five commissions that form part of the Ex Lab project. This commission, unlike the others which have a coastal location, will focus on inland Dorset linking the geology inland with that exposed along the Jurassic Coast. Following a journey from Sherborne to Portland using public footpaths, bridleways, green lanes and trackways this commission will aim to reveal the geology underfoot through the experience of walking the landscape and research into historic land use.
Painter Simon Callery has been selected to create work in response to this brief. Simon’s work has been shown widely in the UK and internationally including Tate Britain, British Museum and Royal Academy of Arts, London. In developing new approaches to landscape based art Callery has worked in collaboration with archaeologists from Oxford Archaeology and the Institute of Archaeology, University of Oxford, over a number of years. This has resulted in the development of new forms for contemporary painting, which aim to engage the viewer on a multi-sensory level, akin to our experience of the material landscape.

Simon will be spending the next few months exploring the Dorset landscape and researching the geology and geomorphology of the area and mapping a geological journey from Sherborne to the sea. He will create work for installation at a venue in Sherborne in July 2012. Follow Simon’s progress at The White Room .
